On December 21, the curtain fell on the “Quality Suppliers’ Visit to Chang’an Automobile Research Institute” organized by Gasgoo in Chongqing under the theme of “Innovation to Win the Future”. Chang’an Automobile is one of the four major groups in China’s auto industry. It attracts more than 11,000 R&D personnel from 17 countries around the world and its R&D strength ranks the first in China’s auto industry for 4 consecutive times in 8 years. As the world’s leading manufacturer of wireless communication modules, SIMCom has been invited to attend this event to discuss with vehicle manufacturers innovative technologies and industry trends of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV).

As the world’s largest automobile market in terms of production and sales, China has obvious advantages in developing smart IoV. T-BOX that connects communications inside and outside the vehicles will become standard devices of smart Internet-connected vehicles. As the core part of T-BOX, wireless communication modules will play a crucial role in the IoV. Having been engaged in the module industry for 15 years and achieved the world’s largest shipment for a number of consecutive years, SIMCom has integrated multiple-side resources and accumulated rich industry experience. In the seminar, SIMCom exhibited its SIM7600CE-T and SIM7800 modules, which are tailor-made for IoV products; SIM7800 modules meet vehicle specifications. The center console and the TBOX are connected together, and all the information is connected with the outside by the TBOX to realize a safe and stable interconnection and entertainment experience for the large traffic in the IoV environment.

SIM7600CE-T is an SMT-packaged module that supports frequency bands like LTE-TDD/LTE-FDD/HSPA+/TD-SCDMA/EVDO and GSM/GPRS/EDGE, as well as LTE CAT4 (with a downstream speed of 150Mbps) with in a size of 30*30*2.9mm. It boasts a stable performance, compact appearance and high cost performance, and is able to realize SMS and data message transmission with low power consumption. SIM7800 is a LGA-packaged Cat 4 module featuring the MDM9628 platform in a size of 34*40*2.9mm with a maximum downstream speed of 150Mbps and an upstream speed of 50Mbps.

In 2018, SIMCom will launch SIM7900 and follow-up products, whose speed will rapidly rise from the downstream 150Mbps to 600Mbps or even 1Gbps. The Internet of things (IoT) is more and more demanding on the distribution of wireless data, and the application platform and capabilities of vehicle-mounted products as a new type of smart terminal equipment will also be substantially renovated. Since module manufacturers are already preparing modules with a downstream speed of 1G, the future of the IoT is indeed coming soon.
Smart Internet-connected vehicles are essentially a driving product revolution, involving multiple aspects such as information exchange, big data, cloud computing and artificial intelligence. China’s auto industry has great opportunities in this area and has a bright future. With the energy revolution and continuous breakthroughs in new materials and technologies, auto products have evolved into new-energy, light-weight, smart and networked ones. Vehicles are being transformed from transportation vehicles into large mobile smart terminals. With the smart-oriented penetration, vehicle-mounted electronic equipment will gradually move from the back-mounted to the front-mounted.
According to the SBD and Accenture research and analysis data, it is estimated that the sales of new vehicles equipped with networking technologies will surge at a CAGR of 21% in 2020 and the penetration rate of networked systems will increase from 14% in 2013 to over 50% in 2020. Up to now, China’s IoV market occupies 26% of the world’s total and its application scale will continue to grow in the next few years: it is estimated that it will reach USD 33.8 billion in 2020 and USD 216.2 billion at a CAGR of 208.5% in 2025. In addition, with the dual drive of the continuous growth of the integrated system of smart phones and the advanced vehicle-mounted embedded system, IoV-based products will be rapidly popularized to millions of households.
Internet-connected vehicles are vehicles running on the Internet. Only through a stable wireless communication module can the IoV and Internet-connected vehicles be achieved. Vehicles as the most important AI carrier will drive the development of the entire industry. China’s Internet infrastructure is better than anywhere, people have the highest degree of trust in Internet facilities and China has the most inclusive data resources. These three points will lead the IoV to be started first in China. The IoV is gaining momentum and will lead the transportation system toward a safer, greener, more efficient and more comfortable future. Internet-connected vehicles will be able to have access to the vast Internet world and share rich resources and services. Given technology collision, cross-border integration and IoT, the future is full of opportunities. Let us work together to create a better future!
